Bridle Fitting Guide

Measure Your Horse, Fit Your Bridle

A bridle that fits correctly is more than comfort. It is the foundation of your horse's wellbeing, performance, and trust. This guide walks you through every measurement, step by step.

An ill-fitting bridle is one of the most common, and most overlooked, sources of discomfort in horses. Pressure on the poll, a pinching browband, or a noseband even slightly too tight can cause tension, resistance, and over time, real pain. That's why Equinetree offers individual sizing for every part of the bridle. Four measurements. A bridle that truly fits your horse. All you need is a soft measuring tape (or a piece of string and a ruler).

What You'll Need

A soft measuring tape or a piece of string and a ruler. Measure in centimeters for best accuracy.

Noseband (A)
Step 01 · A

Noseband (A)

Measure the circumference around your horse's nose, approximately two fingers' width below the cheekbones. The tape should sit snugly but allow two fingers to slide underneath comfortably.

A noseband that's too tight restricts jaw movement and breathing, causing tension throughout the body. Too loose and it offers no stability at all.

Why it matters

Research shows that even a slightly over-tight noseband significantly increases stress indicators in horses. Our size guide accounts for comfort — use your measurement as-is.

Drop Noseband (A*)
Step 02 · A*

Drop Noseband (A*)

The Hanoverian noseband sits approx. 5–7 cm above the nostrils. Any lower and it restricts breathing; any higher and it loses its stabilising function. Wrap a tape measure around the nose at this point for the circumference. Warmblood: 50–60 cm Cob: 47–57 cm

Then measure the bridge of the nose from mouth gap to mouth gap for the noseband length.

Fitting & sizing

Once fitted, two fingers must slide between the bridge of the nose and the leather — snug enough to stay in place, loose enough for comfort. If your horse falls between Cob and Full, sensitive horses often do better in Cob to avoid excess strap length, provided the circumference measurement allows it.

Cheekpiece & Crownpiece (B)
Step 03 · B

Cheekpiece & Crownpiece (B)

Measure the distance from the mouth gap (corner of the lips) straight down to the middle of the neck. Keep the tape flat against the cheek and jaw.

This measurement determines where the cheekpieces and bit rings sit relative to your horse's mouth and jaw line. Crownpiece sizes: Full — 37 cm, Cob — 35 cm.

Why it matters

An incorrect mouth-to-neck length causes the bit to sit too high or too low in the mouth, leading to discomfort and reduced responsiveness. Measure on both sides and use the average if they differ.

Browband (C)
Step 04 · C

Browband (C)

Measure straight across the forehead from one ear base to the other — the points where the browband attaches to the bridle, just below the base of each ear.

A browband that's too short pulls the headpiece forward onto the ears, causing constant irritation. Too long and the bridle shifts with every movement, losing precision.

Why it matters

Ear sensitivity is often behind head-shaking and resistance. A correctly fitted browband lies flat across the forehead with no contact at the base of the ears.
